Nostalgia from the Front Porch

Have you ever been nostalgic for a time and a place you have never been? In our move from the generic site at Wordpress.com to a self-hosted blog with Wordpress.org, we looked long and hard for a theme my wife and I both liked. We finally settled on this one for several reasons, not the least of which is the serene picture of an old front porch that reminded us both of The Waltons. Putting Kids to Work!

In 1938 Congress passed the Fair Labor Standards Act, setting, among other things, the minimum age at which a child can be gainfully employed. Before that, children as young as 6 years old labored for entire days in factories, fields, and various trades, earning little pay, no benefits, and (one would assume) barely a ‘thank you’ from their slave-master bosses.
