Homesteading – claiming a small piece of certainty in uncertain times

June 23, 2012 by Scott

Let's face it. The world is a crazy place, and it's getting crazier by the minute. Between nuclear disaster, endless wars, pandemic disease, the collapse of the dollar, worldwide food shortages, and various and sundry governments (city, county, state, federal, the UN - you name it) that all want to get in your pockets and run your life, sometimes things can feel pretty hopeless from a little guy's perspective. And believe me, I'm a 'little' guy. Between myself and my wife, we 'control' four … [Read more...]

Fatherhood Under Fire

June 16, 2012 by Scott

I know every generation before us had it rougher than we do. You know, they had to walk 5 miles in the snow uphill both ways to school and all that jazz, but I’m just going to say it – it’s STILL tough being a dad! Maybe I don’t have to grind it out for 12 hours a day in the coal mines like my grandfather and great-grandfather did, but my life isn’t so easy either. These days, I don’t think any dad’s is (any dad who truly wants and tries to BE a dad, that is). Have you read the newspaper … [Read more...]

Stuff kids like (but parents hate)

June 2, 2012 by Scott

Being the ‘hip’, ‘happening,’ ‘with-it,’ extremely cool parents we are, we enjoy life to the fullest and want to have fun. Indeed we purposefully seek out good times for us and for our children, although when this happens it’s usually our children who have the fun while we have… something else entirely. The fact of the matter is, kids and parents tend to have wildly differing opinions on just what ‘fun’ is, and it’s been this way at least since the 70’s when we were born. (Anthropologists … [Read more...]

Evil, rotten dictators and the children who love them

May 26, 2012 by Scott

Politically and philosophically, I’m all about liberty and freedom. I really am – just not for my kids. For them, I’m a ruthless, totalitarian dictator (at least that’s how I imagine they must think at times). I make Hugo Chavez look like Mister Rogers. And my wife, the Eva to my Hitler, is just as bad. Consequently, our kids live in a ‘police state’ that’s probably pretty close to a prison if you think about it. Their every move is monitored. Everything they see, eat, and touch is thoroughly … [Read more...]

Five traits our ancestors had that are sorely lacking today

May 19, 2012 by Scott

Out with the old, in with the new. That’s always been the mantra, at least as far back as I can remember. Old things, old ways are constantly being improved upon or replaced with bigger, better, more convenient methods of doing things. Each generation thinks it knows more than the last, and in a way it does. Knowledge builds upon knowledge; technology upon technology. We would never have the cool things we have today if great inventors like Franklin, Edison, Tesla, et al hadn’t paved the way. … [Read more...]
