You know it’s time to stop having kids when…

February 5, 2012 by Scott

We love the Duggars! What awesome role models not only to parents with lots of kids, but all parents who want to raise their children right. We can’t imagine doing what they do, but then again we aren’t all called to raise 19 (or however many it is now) kids. For us, four was our number. For others, it might be something else. I will say this – our youngest is 18 months and there’s not a time that we hold her that we don’t get a little sad thinking that this will be the last time we hold … [Read more...]

Nostalgia from the Front Porch

February 3, 2012 by Scott

Have you ever been nostalgic for a time and a place you have never been? In our move from the generic site at Wordpress.com to a self-hosted blog with Wordpress.org, we looked long and hard for a theme my wife and I both liked. We finally settled on this one for several reasons, not the least of which is the serene picture of an old front porch that reminded us both of The Waltons. We just love that show, especially the first several seasons. It’s an escape, a wonderful journey back to a time … [Read more...]

Putting Kids to Work!

January 28, 2012 by

In 1938 Congress passed the Fair Labor Standards Act, setting, among other things, the minimum age at which a child can be gainfully employed. Before that, children as young as 6 years old labored for entire days in factories, fields, and various trades, earning little pay, no benefits, and (one would assume) barely a ‘thank you’ from their slave-master bosses. Children of poor families were often expected to work and help support themselves and their families. Of course this left little time … [Read more...]

Eating at home vs eating out – the road less travelled

January 24, 2012 by Kim

More often than not our lives are filled with crazy, hectic days. That’s just part of being alive in this modern world filled with so many things to do, places to go, people to see – well you get the idea. Every day of our life we are presented with countless choices. The more hectic our lives are, the less time we have to do the things we need to do, the more tempted we will be when presented with a choice between two things, two paths if you will, to choose the easy road over the one that … [Read more...]

Go to War with Picky!

January 18, 2012 by

We absolutely, unequivocally, positively REFUSE to have picky kids. This isn’t just some character trait that we want them to shed, we believe it truly is the difference between life and death. What kid wouldn’t want McDonalds chicken nuggets, fries, and ice cream for every meal? Kids are KIDS, and kids don’t know anything about making choices that might seem more unpleasant in the short-term (broccoli versus ho-hos) to reap benefits in the long-term (healthy body versus cancer, heart-disease, … [Read more...]
