Making marriage work

May 11, 2012 by Scott

On July 27, 2012 I will have been married to my best friend for 10 years. I’m not trying to earn brownie points or a ‘get out of the doghouse free card’ (would LOVE to have a few of those... where you can buy them?) – just stating a fact. As any Christian in a great marriage can attest, there are two things worth seeking with all your heart – Christ and the right mate. They both offer unconditional love, both wrap you up in the arms of acceptance, peace, safety, fellowship – allowing you to go … [Read more...]

How to teach a child to ride a bike

May 5, 2012 by Scott

One of the greatest gratifications as a parent is teaching your children to do something they didn’t think they could do. Sometimes that extra ‘push’ can be too much, driven by the too-lofty expectations of well-meaning parents. But sometimes, when it’s something you KNOW they need to learn, that you know they will enjoy when they learn it, that push can be a good and necessary thing. Rock Star

April 28, 2012 by Scott

Very few people in life get to be real rock stars. I am one of those people. No, I don’t sing to adoring crowds on a stage, nor do I have any sort of record deal in the works. While I might pick a little guitar (barely), Gibson isn’t signing me up for any endorsement deals anytime soon. But I am no less a rock star, or at least that’s what my wife calls me (I’m not so sure she means it as a good thing but hey, it is what it is...). You see, Kim is the one who takes the kids to school, makes … [Read more...]

Measuring Up

April 21, 2012 by Scott

I think, as parents, it’s in our DNA to want our children to be like us. (After all, they have our God-given DNA, right?) It’s not that we think we’re perfect, but, being human, we’re comfortable with ourselves. We feel like the blood of OUR blood, flesh of OUR flesh should at least have the decency to have the same hobbies, like the same books, television shows, sports, music, etc. that we like. When they veer, as they always do (or so I hear – do they?), we are often angry with them – not in a … [Read more...]

10 Reasons Why We Love Netflix!

April 14, 2012 by Scott

Our family loves Netflix! We really don't have time to watch a whole lot of TV, but when we do, more often than not, Netflix is the medium we use. As Christians who try to be as discerning as possible with the time we do spend in front of the 'tube,' we find that Netflix is a wonderful tool. Here are ten reasons why: 1.) Netflix makes it easy to control and keep tabs on what the kids watch. Granted, they don't yet have 'parental controls,' but if your kids (like ours) know what they are … [Read more...]
